It's not really a gateway drug, but it does end in a lot of dependencies building up. The people who smoke it use it to distract themselves from their shitty lives instead of improving them.
There's no reason to switch from weed to crack or something stronger unless you're truly hopeless, or if there's no difference in risk of apprehension by the police for possession.
I live in Canada, so I don't see experimentation as much. Mostly because where weed is now legal, it's tightly regulated, and every hard drug is still illegal and the laws around them very much enforced.
Comparitively, it's a huge risk to try a drug other than weed in Canada.
