To be honest, at this point, I'm not sure it can be -- I've been harping on this for 20 flipping years, never got anywhere, and there, for a brief shining moment 4 years ago, it looked like there might be enough broad range momentum to curb the tide. Now, I don't know. I think trying to stop it is now a bit too little, too late, and too misdirected.
PS. and I'm really going to shit on everyone's parade: the state/federal departments of education not only set the curriculum; they select the texts and products...including what you can find online (for all the homeschoolers out there; be careful!), including private/charter schools -- who do you think accredits them?
The problem is that there are parents who are quite cool with this -- so they send their kids to progressive private schools and they get involved in the local public school boards and pta and push for all of this shit because you know, they care so much. And they're backed by state and federal gov. if not local (although sometimes all three), as well as all the "non-partisan" local political apparatus (which are all connected to state and national very political apparatus). And then when shit does happen, the people don't go after them...they go after the teachers and school administration, which can be a really mixed bag -- not everybody working there likes the progressives, but... (as a former one, I did throw in the towel...to be conservative and teacher is to stick one's neck out...and still get shit on by your own "side" -- I do rather understand other groups in this regard, like cops).
If you have kids -- really check out your kids' schools (some public ones are still better than some charter); and if you home school better check what's allowed (yes, allowed -- it's not going to last for long). Go underground (my kids' reading lists at home are a lot more diverse and advanced than what the school provides, always has been, and we're in a pretty good district -- we made sure of that).
They leave out a lot of shit -- if I started going over everything that gets left out, I'd be here all day listing it. Right now, I'd just be happy if the motherfuckers would not leave out basic fucking grammar (and now, basic fucking math).
It's all on purpose too...it gives politically connected "educators" a fucking job (that's all this is, a cash grab by people who couldn't really teach in an actual classroom: so they come up with ways to keep the coins in their pockets and make more). They learn real quick who's dick they need to suck, whose agenda they need to push in order to make that money.
But...on a brighter note: people are starting to get tired of this shit; I think they might have gone too far too fast. Donald Trump isn't going away (at least what he started people thinking), and they're having a hard time with that.

You forgot to mention that the boards often leave out history that isn’t favorable to our allies.
