The root cause is probably belief in a material universe. This is the nonsensical belief that dead matter is the primary ingredient of reality, and living consciousness somehow arises out of dead matter as an emergent phenomenon. People with really high IQs believe this shit, even though it's obviously as impossible as 0+0=1.
Because they believe this shit, they are (1) afraid of their own physical deaths, and (2) not worried about consequences for inflicting harm on others, because who's going to punish them? As far as they're concerned, other people are just collections of dead matter, and to the extent they're not, consciousness is just an emergent phenomenon and no one really has any free will.
