My group was heavily involved in this. As well as a particular bar in Tampa. Do you guys remember Tampa Mayor Caster saying that people who didn't wear masks during Super Bowl celebrations would be dealt with? Well what she meant is City Council would suspend the alcohol licenses of 9 businesses!! After they suspended the first 2, my group, The New Tampa Republican Club, made signs, sent out press releases, demonstrated, and left public comment! We did great! One bar had a split 3-3 vote on finding of noncompliance, the other bar was found non-compliant but given 0 days suspension!
We then went and prepared for the next hearings. We paid $150 for HUGE signs of the councilmen who voted to suspend alcohol licenses with their names in big letters! The press came every day, the first day they had a helicopter! Before the 2nd day, we talked to the councilman who would be the deciding vote. On the day of the hearing, he voted that the business was in compliance!! Another win!
The next hearings happened this past Monday. We were all prepared! I was out there with signs and a megaphone 📣 plenty of people lined up for public comment, media on scene. But we found out the City Attorney settled with all 5 businesses! It's great, we really turned up the pressure and had them desperate to settle! Except 3 businesses settled for alcohol suspensions!! I was very upset with them! I went off on one of the attorneys. But I learned the bars had been trying to reach Governor DeSantis! And one of them succeeded!! And they told me to stay tuned and expect more!! We are hoping to see DeSantis take action to counteract the suspension!
The government will always back down while someone is fighting. Eventually you’re only left with the people who don’t fight back. That’s the problem. Good job on your progress. Eternal vigilance is the only solution; the hardest path to walk.
