And if they were mail in ballots without the envelope they came in, you have no way to validate them.

You've identified the source of fraud (the unfolded "mail in" ballots), why would democrats waste time futzing with the machines (and get caught if anyone does a real hand recount) when they can already just manufacture all the votes they need, and do so in a harder to detect way that would survive a hand recount.

The mail in ballots were not the sole source of fraud. Because as you point out, they needed to "manufacture all the votes they need" and to do that they needed the machines.
And with all of that going for them, they still had to shut down the counting to reprogram the machines to cover what they needed.
