Military arms channel did a segment on this. It was really the army bitching. Everyone else thought it was dumb. I have used a forward assist about a dozen times in all my years deployed. Its really only helpful in muddy situations or when you are trying to be quiet. For a toy, like a 3-gun focused build, people will often get an upper with no FA and no dust cover, in order to cut weight.
Forward assist is for big gays.
