Was open carrying while hiking in CO once, passed a man in his 70s (been on some grueling hikes in CO and was always amazed at some of the ages of fellow hikers that seemed to be taking the hike in stride) on the way up, he gave me an odd look. On the way back down he couldn’t wait to comment on it “WHAT DO YOU NEED THAT THING FOR?!!!!!! GUNNA SHOOT A BEAR?!?? RIDICULOUS!”
I was taken by surprise and forget what I said, something like “You never know” and grinned. Plenty of stories of people taking out bears with 9mm btw, just not ideal.
It was near Boulder, so no surprise, place is full of commies.
Last time I did research I think I determined that flathead .45 was the bare minimum for taking down bears. If you're not fucking around then you'll want a shotgun full of slugs.
That being said there are recorded kills on grizzly bears using .22lr, but shooting them in the eyes is easier said than done under pressure.
This is a frequent problem for me on the left coast.
I open carry a large stainless revolver everywhere, they tend to stay clear but still 2 encounters in the last 90 days.
The lunatics have become more emboldened since the Potato took over.
