The minimum wage debate is full of uninformed people on both sides.
Fast food, gas stations, and stores have been paying employees more than minimum for years now. Quite a few of them. I see signs by McDonald's and Wendy's talking starting pay of $10-$12.
There are some small businesses that can only afford minimum wage, but that would change if we quit letting our "representatives" make policies that only big businesses can afford.
We REALLY REALLY REALLY need to find a way to stop the circle jerking on issues. Things change, like the free market raising wages without law, yet we still pretend things are where they were years ago. The left is far worse about this but they're pulling our side into it, and it's too force a divide for the communist revolution.
Frabjly, anyone making minimum wage isn't even trying. Within 10 miles of your job you could find more than minimum wage.
This. I was doing a job hunt for entry level full time, and didn't find one that was listed at minimum wage. That wage only applies to the absolutely unproven and unskilled, at the smallest enterprises.
Most states have minimums higher than the federal wage, which honestly makes good sense. Montana and New Jersey have vastly different costs of living--let them choose their policy based on the requests of their people, and see where it takes them.
