I hate to be that guy yet again, but in many cases of the deaths from Covid, it is your own immune system that is responsible for killing you. In simple terms, the immune system mounts a massive inflammatory response, especially in the lungs, which is why people go into respiratory distress. In some cases of people who recover, they have long term or even permanent lung damage.

Now, most people will recover just fine, most will not even need to go to the hospital, but it is your immune response to the virus that kills you.

The link doesn't seem to work, but my general opinion on masks that it is a purely political decision. If I am right, then they will not go away until their political utility is exhausted.

I should clarify that I am talking about cloth and regular paper masks for the general population, not N95 masks for healthcare providers actively taking care of Covid+ or Covid suspected patients. All studies and recommendations previously conducted (I think in influenza) specifically cautioned that masking the general population was not recommended. That is probably why Fauci initially did not recommend it either. Several weeks later he reversed course, but it was not based on any study or findings. To this day, I do not believe there is any study that finds a statistically significant benefit to wearing a cloth mask and stuffing it back into your pocket to be reused for a week before you wash it or toss it.

When I am called to intubate a Covid+ patient, I wear an N95 mask, paper gown, and face shield as per our hospital policies. Most of my colleagues go way overboard when they do it. When I take care of regular patients or patients without a covid test (they all get tested on admission or pre admission if it's a surgical patient), I don't do anything special beyond my hospital requirements. I wear a regular mask when I go into a public place (my state requires it), and rip it off as soon as I step outside. When visiting my 100 year old grandmother, I wear a fresh N95.

I'm so sorry after you wrote all of that but I did not mean to ask about masks. I was actually wondering about the tweet that the post links to: https://twitter.com/raisoncommune/status/1367027590310068229

No problem. Unfortunately I can't comment because this topic is not one that I specialize in. The concerns seem valid, but I have not seen these specific concerns raised until now. That being said, if we look at other highly contagious and mutatable viruses such as influenza, these concerns do not seem to be warranted. But I don't know enough specifics about immunology or epidemiology to give an educated response. I would like to see experts (not politicians like Fauci) comment on this though.
