The thing is Ripley could have been written as a man. It was the story and the acting. Similar with Sara Connor or Clarice Starling or Kill Bill it is not about the sex of the person it is about the writing. The people now writing this are putting the sex of the character the focus and not the plot
Ripley was never ruined. Her last appearance in Alien 4 was still a great character, even if the movie itself was weak. I doubt we'll ever see Sigourney play Ripley again and I doubt they'll reboot the character. If they do, it will be retarded.
I think Alien 3's so-called Assembly Cut is seriously underrated.
They found a way to make an Alien film without falling back on simply recreating either of the first two. It's unique. Granted, it's not perfect and it stabs the second film's hard-won resolution right in the face, but it works.
They also killed strong female character franchises too.
Sara Connor and Ellen Ripley were badasses that watched their franchises turn to shit as well.

Hey....Sigourney Weaver is a fucking badass and amazing actress. She was the only one who could have played Ripley, man or woman
Well, the sex of the protagonist is fairly important to her relationship to Bill and the ending, but yes, your point stands.
