We import A LOT of food. Could the US feed itself...surely....but a massive reallocation of crops and land would have to occur. There would be some VERY bad years while soil chemistry was adjusted for different crops, machinery was modified or replaced and new crops planted then harvested.
Yes, we have a surplus of many things, but many other things we simply choose not to grow and we import. So there would be a massive period of readjustment and many would either near starve or starve.
