Run for school board or city council. Door knock, and if there are any decent churches in the area, see if you can get connected with them. A church in my area essentially controls local elections with their influence, both school board, city council, and mayor of at least 2 cities, because there are no (R) or (D) on the ballot for such positions, and most people don't vote in them.
