So a digital image by an artist sells for nearly $70million at an art gallery. We laugh. "look, more money laundering" etc.

NFT Art, or "crypto art" is a bit of a buzz right now, and a lot of folks are laughing at it.

I would pose the following, however.

Crypto Art will be used as a tool by the elite to launder money, just as a lot of "modern art" is used, but that is the distraction.

What may really be going on is that Crypo Art is being pushed so that it becomes a part of our daily life.

At some point, sooner or later, the news media will begin to use this blockchain technology to claim legal right to any images or such that they put online, thus paving the way for much faster, easier, and more punishing use of the DMCA.

"you're not allowed to use that picture" will become "we legally own that picture, your using even part of it in a meme that hurt our feelings is now an offense we can sue you in court for"

Cryto art is likely just a back door for the media to get around fair use.
