I just think you are confused on the order of things. You are correct in that Money pervaded the usage and came up with a crazy idea, but he was taking a simple term that was used in every day language (gender) and changing the definition.
The left never creates their own things, they infiltrate and subvert. They are attempting to change the meaning of an every day word that simply means 'biological sex'.

Gender was just another term for biological sex. It was like saying a person's privates vs saying a person's genitals.
People wrote about mankind - not humanity. Somehow "MANkind" became something that was excluded women but "huMANity" was acceptable.
There were stewards and stewardesses. There were firemen and police men. There were garbage men - who are now sanitation engineers
"Sanitation expert and a maintenance engineer
Garbage man, a janitor and you my dear
A reunion flight attendant my oh my
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky"
That said, gender and sex were not used interchangeably until the introduction of gender as a subjective concept.
