Only in Larp world is whiskey a necessity. With all due respect we need to be attentive and clear minded.

9
CelesteD 9 points ago +9 / -0

This is very true, but it functions as a bartering tool in a true SHTF situation, and if the proof is high enough, it can also be a nice gun cleaning solvent, and antiseptic.

Personally I prefer the clear liquors for those purposes, but whatever.

14
Reality_Check 14 points ago +14 / -0

High proof neutral grain spirits are a great "prep" item and will last longer than you or your kids if properly stored. They can be used for a ton of things from disinfecting wounds and water, to cooking fuel in a little hobo stove, to literal engine fuel,to bartering leverage, to a great improvised weapon with a little fire.

Not a good idea if you abuse alcohol though. Really, drinking has basically no long term good benefits but about a million bad ones. I'm trying to find a way to stop myself, but I literally have it wired in my brain that x situation calls for a drink. It's a really bad thing to develop. And even the most careful people who consider themselves "wise " can develop an addiction.

I'm not judging anyone, it's just a drug that has enough historical providence to be a part of daily life.

4
CelesteD 4 points ago +4 / -0

I agree, and I hope you beat this thing fren. I just never wanted to ever get sick and puke again, can't stand when that happens, and I also realized I can stop ok, but if I start drinking, I can't stop.

Thats an alcoholic. Ok, wait maybe that didn't make sense. I can be dry for good periods of time, but if I ever start up, I binge.

Hope that makes sense.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that caffeine destroys your willpower to abstain.

3
wiombims 3 points ago +3 / -0

Caffeine can be a trigger, like almost any chemical. It's probably a pavlovian conditioning associated with caffeine rather than the caffeine itself. There's something really interesting going on in the brain with swallowing and crunching. They don't seem super important but people on liquid diets will start crunching ice otherwise they get jittery just like a crackhead looking for something to chew. And if you've ever seen Adams' show with the simultaneous sip or Crowder's knockoff, you know about that too. I think they're kind of jerks for doing it because it works via release of oxytocin from a little pea sized part of your brain when you take that sip in that conditioned environment. It's a chemical that controls all sorts of things and it really is similar to someone touching you in a loving way, having some sugar-water, or taking a hit from your favorite drug.

2
CelesteD 2 points ago +2 / -0

well, I know for fact methamphetamine lowers inhibition, it would not be much of a stretch for all stimulants to then, right? it's not really important, but it is anecdotal that I've noticed.

2
wiombims 2 points ago +2 / -0

Disinhibition is a specific thing that happens in the brain, I wouldn't assume that. Just like there's a difference between chemical addiction and colloquial addiction. What you could be seeing from other stimulants might be anything from putting people in a good mood to any other little factor like that which doesn't directly affect impulse control centers in the brain. You could test it and maybe even get a grant to study it if that kind of thing strikes your fancy. You could just get 40 of your friends and ask half of them to give you a dollar and have the other half drink an espresso and ask them to give you a dollar. Then repeat the experiment a few times. It's not a terrible science fair experiment for one of your kids either.

Reality_Check 1 point ago +1 / -0

Appreciate it, started in the military and got worse from there. Then it just kind of stuck around. The worst part is I don't really black out or throw up or anything, it just makes me feel like crap and waste time. Takes away from other stuff I could be doing oh, not to mention what it is probably doing to my body. Kind of working on maybe looking at career change and a move ...jjust getting away from old things may help stop old things I hope.

2
Patriots_dont_kneel 2 points ago +2 / -0

Keep strong fren. Alcohol is a bitch, I abused it for nearly a decade (at least a bottle of wine a day, I know that's amateur hour for most alcoholics but still). For me trading that with vaping cannabis was what got me out. I'm not endorsing anyone doing the same, you're still swapping one addiction for another. The ideal thing would be to drop all drugs, but I'm not strong enough mentally for that yet. But at least I'm not slowly poisoning myself and waking up with a headache every day.

2
Reality_Check 2 points ago +2 / -0

Thanks, it's not as bad as it could be definitely. Diluted grocery store vodka is a lot better than the high proof rum and stuff it used to be. It's weird, I don't even LIKE being intoxicated. It's just a bizarre drive to do it...but I guess that's what addiction is. Like I said, I think making life changes might help. It's just really hard to get on that path. I'll hang in there if you are *fist bump *

So again, please contact me about kratom man. It can help you quit alcohol, and just touch it when you want it, not feel like you need it.

Kratom is good for mood boost, energy, relaxation, sleep, pain, and so much more. All depends on the batch you have to what it will help with.

When I had shingles late last year, kratom saved my life with pain! Took it a few times a day, and it worked as good or better than Vicodin. Was amazing how much it brightened my day up!

So yeah man, hit me up. I'd be happy to explain things to you.

Beware. Kratom is demonized by maisntream media and big pharma because it's an all natural, dirt cheap alternative to far more dangerous drugs that they sell.

99% of the fear mongering about kratom is intentionally misleading, so don't believe just anything you read about it!

They wanted to outlaw it because now millions of Americans use it daily rather than pills, and have a better life for it, and pharma is no longer profiting off of them.

Reality_Check 1 point ago +1 / -0

I think part of it might be a hormone imbalance, along with poor handling of a lot of personal problems along with the ever increasing problems we're having in the country. I'm actually going to see about HRT initially to see if that might be part of the problem causing me to feel really sluggish and depressed, which makes me feel the need to drink. I will look into what you suggested, however. Sometimes the real answers aren't where you expect.

1
CelesteD 1 point ago +1 / -0

When I am truly addicted to something the ONLY thing that works is erasing any and all people who do it from my life, sounds harsh but it works. Out of sight, out of mind. Also taking up exercise for awhile, seems to normalize the body for me. Pay close attention to TV of all things too, seeing someone drink can trigger it as well, it's happened to me a couple times.

Usually in those hard boiled detective shows where a guy has a nice single malt on his desk, or even sneaks a flask. NCIS has done this a few times where Gibs is relaxing. It can be hard to get away from the influence of it.

1
Bitfypmer 1 point ago +1 / -0

Meh...as long as you only drink every other day your good....right? RIGHT??!!!!!!!

1
MAGAsJustBegun 1 point ago +1 / -0

Hey man, if you're trying to quit drinking so much alcohol, look into Kratom.

I've personally witnessed the plant help many people get off worse drugs. Alcohol, dope, pills, ect.

Do your research, and feel free to ask me any questions. I'm quite knowledgeable on kratom and use it myself for different reasons.

What it can do to get off dangerous drugs is amazing though. Kratom poses risks like anything on this earth, but nothing remotely as dangerous as alcohol, pills or any hard drugs (I used to love alcohol, and I consider binge drinking similar to a hard drug)

Kratom had killed my appetite for alcohol, which I dislike, because I had complete self control, but loved getting plastered and having wild nights out.

Well, kratom made me not like alcohol so much. It changed my vibe.

Luckily, I was never able to have an addiction to alcohol because I get far too nasty of hangovers too easily, and it gives me dysphoria sometimes.

So, if I didn't get such bad hangovers, I'd likely have had an alcohol issue.

What I got more into drinking, I built a huge bar in my basement, got a full size beautiful beer fridge, and even kegerator!

When my parents saw it they got scared because I had 40+ liquor bottles, full fridge of 150 beers, ect.

Over time they realized 90% of the liquor was untouched months and years later, and that I don't drink excessively.

They were glad lol. I still have most of those bottles I bought 5 years ago... I just liked having a seriously large selection.

I've always enjoyed having a full bar. Got oldschool bar LEDs, lights, signs, abd more.

I upload some pics sometime for you guys! It's a cool pub!

Better than most dive bars!

Kentucky bourbon baby. I'm not holing up without it. Have a gold coin for trade.

In a situation where trading and barter become necessary, whiskey and cigarettes will be the most valuable thing on the planet and able to trade for anything you need.

Good point. I used to be prescribed amphetamines. Maybe I should get a new script to save for if or when I need it.

They help a ton with work and attention span, but I don't like the side effects, loss of appetite, and mood shift.

With that said, they worked amazingly for me to do well in school. I never took them daily, so never developed an addiction. But would be smart to have in case of things going south in USA.

Stronger, more energy, more efficient brain synapses, less appetite, ect. All good for military types.

That's why Hitler's SS was essentially on forms of medical meth, aka amphetamines. Pretty sure the Nazis introduced amphetamines to the drug market, right?

1
BingusCombat 1 point ago +1 / -0

It should be $4,000 an ounce compared to the current power of the Fiat dollar!

1
Nellie_the_Beaut 1 point ago +1 / -0

Copper, too! Just got myself another stack of 5oz bars. That relatively cheap metal is always in high demand.

2
BingusCombat 2 points ago +2 / -0

I was thinking this today as I got handed 3 pennies as change.

Like yeah they're not worth anything as currency...but that's metal. You have to bust a lot of ass to get pure metal. They're valuable as metal, not for fiat!

2
Nellie_the_Beaut 2 points ago +2 / -0

The copper bars I got are .999 pure. I image they can be melted down pretty quick for industrial, tech or other uses. Every useful metal is in “limited supply” I guess. But copper always seems to be top of the list as stolen from houses, building sites, municipal areas. Definitely a market for it.

2
BingusCombat 2 points ago +2 / -0

Oh dude any kind of metal would be intensely valuable if shit broke down.

I mean think of the energy you would have to expend to find pure metal if we didn't have the infrastructure!

I kind of want to debate you about energy of that round compared to civil war era rifles and rifling in shotguns in general.

Nothing is stopping you from doing so, except for common and "technically educated, borne from years of experience" sense.

Serious question: I was toying with the idea of starting to stack some silver, but how exactly would it be more useful/valuable if things really SHTF than more bullets, dried food or prepping supplies?

0
14DaysToFlatten 0 points ago +2 / -2

$5 in silver weighs less than $5 in bullets or beans. Smaller, too.

1
MeltingSnowflakes 1 point ago +1 / -0

$300 worth of silver for when shit hits the fan

1

The coins on the bottom are. To my knowledge, I believe most minted 1964 and before were. Quarters, at least, not sure about other denominations.

1
14DaysToFlatten 1 point ago +1 / -0

Dimes and fifty cent pieces, too. Some nickles, too.

1
CelesteD 1 point ago +1 / -0

I thought nickels were specifically named that because they were made of nickel.

1
14DaysToFlatten 1 point ago +2 / -1

Nickels minted during WWII have silver in them because nickel was a critical material for the war effort.

They're hollow points. They expand on impact and cut a larger wound channel, dump energy faster, and penetrate less.

They're exclusively used for personal defense.

Good to see the silver bullion and old coins. I hope everyone spends their 1400 only on shit they need. Guns, Ammo, Food, Silver, Gold, Something of value. Dont waste it guys like liberals will. This money being spent is going to increase the 'velocity of money' (the amount of times a dollar changes hands in a giving year) and cause inflation to go much higher, that and the money supply going from 4 trillion to 18 trillion (20 trillion when you factor in the bullshit 1.9 trillion covid 'relief' bill)... the jump from 4 trillion to 20 trillion was in just 1 year. That is massive inflation, but it doesnt become a problem until money comes out of hiding, like with this 1400 each person is getting. So spend it fast, and on shit you NEED.

During the apocalypse, those shotgun shells will be worth more than that gold. I'm not talking about self preservation. I mean they will be worth a lot to trade.

2
wiombims 2 points ago +2 / -0

Nobody wants shotgun shells even now (they're still on shelves everywhere and absolutely nothing else besides some 7.62x39 is anywhere on the east coast for months now).

Fun fact: paper shells for shotguns are very good (old-school shooters who don't care about rain even prefer them for the smell and feel) and shotguns are dimensionally still designed for use with black powder. In the apocalypse, if there's enough technology to make paper, there will be shotgun ammunition available for a reasonable price.
