I agree, he got an idea of what his future would be like when he addressed the troops as he was leaving DC.

His speech was met with complete silence, he looked surprised, spoke for a few more minutes, stopped. Complete silence. He spoke again, stopped, again not a sound.

He got a frightened look on his face and left. Hope he wears that expression for the rest of his meaningless life.
