When my brother graduated boot camp, they went on and on about the increased Diversity from all over the planet and the whole audience cheered instead of thinking, "why the hell are their foreigner agents in our military?"

Well, children like being told they’re special. And boot camp counts for very little in terms of actual military indoctrination. A year or two of cranky ass sergeants and that diversity hire bitch who keeps screwing up your pay is educational. So I wouldn’t call it hopeless based on that alone.
But yes, I agree that we got too comfy. Too comfy, too safe. Unending peacetime is dangerous for the human psyche I think. Why would we develop a finely tuned threat detection system if there are no threats?
