Yet they go apeshit when someone of non-black heritage says it. Something tells me the word still powerful enough.
The real answer is that media conditioning taught them to create peer group reinforcement of this behavior.
Interestingly, you never hear Asians refer to each other in slurs, nor Mexicans (Latinx?), or even white folks. Nope, only race that refers to each other in slurs is blacks, I just think they are insulting themselves to remain a victim.

This is simply not true. Been around Asians for many years. I always found it curious why they self-deprecate so often. In my opinion it’s for non-asian’s benefit. If you are around a group of college age Chinese, Korean, or Vietnamese they will at some point make a joke regarding their eyes or about being unexciting or not meeting some high standard. Granted they wouldn’t call themselves chink or something but they will use more light-weight slurs or stereotype references.
I am Asian, and I have never heard any of my family, relatives or friends use words like "chink" or "gook" when referring to each other. Now as far as jokes go, Asians don't really care about jokes, pee pee in your coke.
Certainly not on any level as blacks calling each other nigga. I have Chinese relatives and they do talk about their yellow skin which is something I never really saw but they are deadset on referring to their yellow complexion as not as nice as my pale ass. All the woman have also had the eye surgery. You’re right though all my Asian friends never were using slurs they just embraced the silliest of stereotypes and made them into jokes.

Also, like "Deplorable," who can use it and who can't matters-- only the group appropriating the term is can use it to refer to themselves. Anyone else using it is taken as an insult.
Years ago, when there was still a modicum of sanity, I remember Season One Luke Cage reprimanding a young black thug who dared to call him that word. He gave him a history lesson about the Boston Massacre, and what it means to be an American. I was like "Damn right, Luke! Spread the truth!"
Then, somehow, by season 2, Luke is punching holes in walls, scaring his girlfriend, and saying "Sometimes you gots to lean into it, and become the Nigga that they say you is." Made me very, very sad. Somehow, it was more racist to have a black superhero who respects the police (though he himself was set up by dirty cops when he WAS a cop,) and who protects women and teaches children, than it is to turn him into any and all negative stereotypes you could imagine.
I swear, Time Travel needs to be a thing. At least to let me go to a timeline where people still know how to act and think.
