I'm 60+ years old, retired, spent almost 20 years working at the health department in IT, so I'm not a medical professional but had to attend all the first responder trainings after 9/11. Being an IT type I'm curious about a lot of things and paid attention to my training no matter what it was. In the 2000's we had a couple of true pandemics that no one gave a shit about. We didn't even wear masks at the health department at the HIV clinic, a human pox we didn't have a handle on yet.
Fast forward to today. My wife of almost 40 years, who (I think) has been voting conservative all this time, is shrieking (not exaggerating) at me for refusing to get the "vaccine". And every other conservative I know has gotten in line to get it. The stupid part is, if YOU have been vaccinated, and you believe it's effective, then why the hell should you care if I've had the shot or not? I can't make her understand this.
I didn't see this kind of hysteria with HIV, and we thought that might kill us all. Something has gone terribly askew on the treadle.
I was bringing this up to some coworkers, they just said "well they didn't know about coronavirus at that point" False, they did. Its a cold.
So I came to the conclusion; the media warped everyone to fear.
From the standpoint of conservatives who are rushing out to get the vaccine, it didn't help that Trump pushed the narrative that it would get us back to normal.
The Trump admin bet on vaccine once their push for therapeutics fell short. He is the reason warp speed came to fruition and quite honestly the reason all the usual protections from new drugs being tested on people were cast aside like a used Kleenex.
Add the fact that people are not very smart, easily led and looking to fit in and you get a perfect storm of fear based compliance with virtue on the side.

Well, there was also a concerted effort to downplay their effectiveness. Once doctors decided to refuse prescribing them, it was all downhill from there. Thing is, with a survival rate of 99.75% it was easy to write off gains from any drugs as statistically insignificant.
This is about the time they started rebranding every death with covid present as a covid death. Had to ramp up those numbers to justify the shutdown and vaccine.

Exactly. My dad is more conservative than me and diehard Trump as well but he was actually excited to get the vaccine. Idk why.... for his age he is in incredibly good shape... hell for any age.... he could probably beat me in an endurance race and he’s damn near 70. I don’t criticize Trump often but I agree this was a bad idea
You’re forgetting that he also promoted hydroxychloroquine heavily, which prompted the media to viciously attack him and downplay its effectiveness. Trump promoted anything he thought would help.
