This movie is pretty good and his character is extremely flawed to the point of perfection. I rewatched it recently and noticed all of the little things I missed before. Guy has some anger problems. His wife divorced him and the judge makes an example of him. At one point while talking to the cops the wife even admits he didn't do anything so there's no reason to take his kid from him. His mom makes a comment about how he blames her for something she said in court. It really gets under your skin how realistic those parts about father's losing there kids are.
Only getting worse in this day an age. Not only would a lying mom get the kids, but she'd get a gofundme, public appointed grief counselor, and alimony forever.

Most EXCELLENT movie, Falling Down. You can have it your way, but breakfast ended 5 minutes ago...

I have that on DVD, was thinking of re-watching it....
If I recall correctly, I think M.D. said this was his favorite character to play from his Hollywood acting career.
