Houston is an interesting city. San Antonio is blue collar, Austin is weird, Dallas is more old-money-Southern, but Houston exists to make money.

You can have a very nice neighborhood with a high rise officer building across one street, and a strip of fucking Tijuana-grade Mexican car shops two blocks away. We also have four or five different “downtown” areas, so there’s no large discernible concentration of nice architecture, shops, and museums all together.
A lot of the city has been turned around in the last decade or so, though. Commutes are so terrible that even the shittiest neighborhoods near one of the big work areas are all being upgraded with new housing, stores, etc. (Except east of downtown proper).
The Katrina people committed their worst offenses against property values in a pretty central area, actually. ItMs a testament to how bad things are there that it’s one of the only areas that has proximity to the Galleria but isn’t turning around.
