Benedict was too orthodox. They wanted a Catholic Spring, and Bergoglio seemed like the kind of guy who could make that happen. He was a Jesuit, which is a socially radical and unorthodox religious order, and he was stupid, that is to say, easily controlled.

Benedict, for all his orthodoxy, was too weak to stand up to the subversive elements in the Vatican. They want homosexuality, birth control, abortion on demand, divorce, transgenderism, one world religion and one world government, as much evil as they can get. Rather than stand and fight, Benedict took a huge step back, going so far as to "resign" the ministry of the papacy while maintaining the office. Like the king says "I'm king, but this other guy here is going to call himself king and do all my public appearances and oversee parliament." This is where we are.

Benedict half-assed it. He could have quit, gone back to Germany and lived out his days in a monastery. Instead he stayed the Vatican and basically became the pope you never hear from while some other guy pretends he's pope. Why he did this only he can say, and he's not talking, but the evidence that he never properly resigned or intended to resign are as plain as day. He's still there. Still answering to Benedict. Still wearing white. Still bestowing his apostolic blessing. All things the pope does. Looking back on history, whenever we have two people claiming to be pope, one is a fraud and a liar. I know who my money is on in this case.

It's a bit complicated for a layman, especially a non-Catholic, which is why most people think nothing of this. "Benedict clearly resigned. Everyone calls Bergoglio pope, so he's pope." But there's plenty of solid explanation as to why that's false. Here for example: https://fromrome.info/2020/03/08/at-an-answer-to-why-benedict-resigned-the-ministerium-not-the-munus/
