2 and 3 are significantly better if you know about the major plot point that was changed in the first movie. It was never about "turning humans into batteries." The machines were using human brains as a server farm for their entire civilization because the brain is a better super computer than anything the machines could build. Which heavily suggests why the war would have begun, and why they didn't just use the same thermal power the humans were using.
That's why the Matrix and the Machine Mainframe were actually interconnected. It was the same thing. Makes the entire second and third move make a hell of a lot more sense, especially that weird ending where they negotiated peace with some people willingly choosing to stay in the Matrix, because it was the only way for both civilizations to survive.
Some Hollywood exec thought the concept was too far above the average viewer and forced them to change it to something simpler, and thus stupid, like batteries.

It's been a while since I watched it, but I remember not really liking the Oracle and Agent Smith sitting on the bench at the end.
