It was beautiful on the surface even up to a couple years ago, and there are good people ("on both sides..." <sorry, couldn't resist>). Open discussion was discouraged even before that, but now... you can only agree or be targeted. And even then be targeted, if they decide you looked at them wrong. You sum it up pretty accurately.
