The IRS never can catch all the tax "errors" the main issue is when you get in their radar and they fine comb your financial history because they have no statute of limitation. So I would never tell someone to not do their taxes but take everything you can and ommit all that you forgot. Write in as much loss as you can, deduct as much as you can.
The IRS is already overwhelmed. I've been appealing an $80 fine for the past year on some past due excise tax. I'll get my day in court eventually and cause them to spend way more than $80 to collect it if they ever do.
