And the primary reason for doing this is due to extremely strict EU regs on the horizon that basically makes any "fun" ICE untenable. So, once again, blame the politicians.
VW cheated on emissions tests for their diesel engines and got caught and promptly fucked. It actually caused them to axe parts of their Audi and Porsche racing programs and cut a whole bunch of budget for vehicle development across all brands.
