It's a stripped-down piece of a virus that carries a gene sequence for a single antigen. This is believed to be saver than the whole virus, and more likely to represent a live virus safely than a killed virus.

Moderna and Phizer creates a spike protein using the person's cells, and the way it does it is more invasive to the subject, the spike protein is remanufactured by the persons DNA. J & J inserts a spike protein a bit differently, less invasive.
All of them change the persons genetics.
