Most people don't have the time to actually sift through scientific data let alone analyze it - usually they just read some dumbed down crap prepared for a lay-audience in publications like "Scientific American" of which have become increasingly political.

What most people think of as science is just the promotion of science fields to the general public for more government funds. The most guilty culprit of this is anything in the "green" sciences especially climate change alarmism.
