Default status is just used nowadays to boost up certain subs to make them look bigger then they actually are(ffs they made the sub that's supposed to be exclusively for women one a while ago when the vast majority of reddit is male), don't ever trust sub counts on reddit.
Not that any of us would given how suppressed the sub-count on the original T_D was.
I think /r/politics was a default subscribed sub to new users. Dunno if that has changed in recent years.
