There were massive numbers of Irish immigrants fighting on both sides, most of them for citizenship, some of them taking their guns and training back to Ireland to fight against the British. The Union used about 2.2 million troops, about 150k were Irish immigrants. The Confederacy used about 1 million troops, about 40k were Irish immigrants.
