Most stores have a prompt to scan the back of your ID. It's just the cashiers following policy because if they don't do it once and the customer is undercover they'll get either in trouble or fired. Some stores don't even let under 21 people sell alcohol to people who are of age, so they have to get someone of age just to ring up the purchase...
There are some registers that won't allow alcohol orders through without a card being scanned. Cash registers are so horribly over engineered it's not even funny.
