Did you know, Israel's wall is successful, not just because of the wall, but the manner in which they defend it? Walls alone will not prevent people from getting into the country just like walls alone don't prevent people in prison from escaping.
The fundamental problem here is that people face zero repercussions for getting caught crossing the border. If they fail, they get sent back immediately and they try again. Walls alone are not a deterrent. They are a barrier.
In order to deter people, you have to give it an associated punishment for failure. Now, is that punishment a sniper rifle? It could be. Like another poster pointed out, you don't need a kill on site rule in order to deter people. The threat of getting shot can be more than sufficient to deter people.
My post was not critical of a border wall, it was critical of the quality and content of meme/message. I am a strong supporter of borders, including our southern wall. An armed wall, if need be. Always have been and will be.
That's very different than making insinuations and jokes about plugging illegals with a sniper rifle.
But it's not just randomly shooting illegals with a sniper rifle. It's shooting people who are in the act of trying to illegally cross the border.
This is an incredibly important distinction.
It's the difference between shooting someone when they are trying to rob you versus shooting them a week later. One is logical, rational and provides immediate action. The other is vindictive or vengeful.
If you try to cross the Israel border illegally, you will get shot. This isn't done just because it's a border but because of the threat involved with that border. It's why we have a southern border crisis but a substantially less problematic northern border.
