The judiciary in Minneapolis is causing problems. Another judge openly allowed the settlement agreement to go through in the midst of jury selection and the judge knew exactly what was going on, but still allowed it. That’s why Chauvin’s defense brought it up for the record because it will cause major problems down the line.
There is an active collision between the higher court judiciary and the city council to disturb the objectivity of this trial.
Keith Ellison's son is a city council member that voted yes on the $27 million settlement.
Nelson also noted that Attorney General Keith Ellison’s son Jeremiah Ellison is on the City Council. Keith Ellison heads the prosecution team.
“We’ve got a mayor who’s a lawyer by trade… he should know better, and obviously Mr. Ellison’s son is a City Council member,” Nelson said.
“And I’m not accusing Mr. Ellison of anything… but it is profoundly disturbing to the defense, because ultimately the goal of this system is to provide a fair trial, and this is not fair.”
At this point I would probably say that the defense has grounds to call for a mistrial, but considering all the politics involved in this case, it’s very unlikely.
