No, not really. I was looking it up, it says it's lacto-fermented, but somehow the acidity is reduced? Whatever it is it's some milder form of fermentation because it doesn't have that strong sauerkrauty flavor that most lacto fermented vegetables do.
It was... very interesting. Weird, kinda strong taste. Basically tastes like if you've ever had the green tea leaves in your mouth. I would guess most people wouldn't like it. I'm surprised it ever became a traditional food, as it doesn't seem to have any mass appeal, even for an Asian food. I... kinda liked it? I have a very dull sense of taste so my tastes range broad. I would order it again, but I'm weird in that I'll like something like that just to change it up, and this one is definitely very different from most foods. But if I end up eating there often I won't order it repeatedly.
If you can stand or like the taste of those tea leaves the salad was very well made. Variety of tastes, nice garlic and lemon tang.
My only apprehension is that it had me on edge for hours. I'm sensitive to salt and caffeine and can get like nervous spells, and this definitely had me going. I guess the flipside of that is apparently these Burmese have discovered the ultimate energy food. If I was really tired I'd definitely depend on it to wake my ass up; they should start selling it to truckers.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. You've definitely put me in the mind to seek out a local Burmese restaurant. And also, to try the tea leaf salad.
