Unions had their time, it has largely passed. When employers and the Gov't did not give a F about the health, safety of their work force the Unions stepped up and forced change. I really do not see Unions in this role any longer- YMMV and please if you feel I am wrong here I am ready to listen.
I agree with you that things like 40 hour / 5 day work weeks are good. I think a lot of safety standards had more to do with investigative journalism though.
Sadly, journalism is mostly a dead profession. And unions always had their roots in communism.
