Several have...in Europe. It can be done. But keep in mind that problems (and thus solutions to end those problems) tend to be generational.

I recommend looking up The Fourth Turning. It's a pretty old book now, but it gives you an idea that a lot of these things run on a cycle, generations are like seasons, and right now we're in "winter".

We're at the precipice, indeed. But we're basically at the end of a cycle that began with World War 2. The "solutions" to all the "problems" back then are coming back to bite us. Whatever happens, we'll enjoy or be stuck with it for probably 80-100 years. But cultures have to renew themselves at least once per human lifespan.

Teach your kids right, well, your grandchildren and great grandchildren may know prosperity again someday.

If it is of any comfort, if we apply the conclusions of the Fourth Turning to China, you start realizing they're also pretty damn close to a precipice as well... Which I believe is why we're stuck with COVID-1984. They needed an excuse to kill or otherwise silence dissidents who were growing in number.
