When marriage was redefined in the Netherlands the majority of people (including the majority of gays) were opposed to it. They initially said they only wanted civil unions. The slope was slippery from the very beginning.
I'm of the opinion that marriage should be legally replaced as something like a two person "life contract" that functions like a corporation and can be assigned terms and limitations for various scenarios.
