Income tax and property tax are the most unjust taxes there are. I'm not sure which is worse. I can kind of understand sales tax and stuff like that cause it's use-based and affects only the people that participate. Though I loathe all taxes.
For most of US history, the federal government paid for itself with tariffs, which are probably the "least bad" form of tax possible. It would issue war bonds too, but before Wilson's income tax, those were backed by the promise of future tariffs.
Then the government decided it wanted to grow, so they promised an income tax that would be a 1% tax on the 1% (IIRC)...and both the growth and the taxation benefitted evil far more than good.

While I think the government is far to big and wasteful, even if it were trimmed way down you got to pay for it somehow.
