Democrats love to "negotiate" on things like gun control and illegal aliens and single-payer healthcare and stuff. It frames the issue as "look, they want to compromise and you're being stubborn." But the problem is that there's not really room for give-and-take on these issues—negotiating how much of an absolute you're willing to surrender when there's no other thing involved is just debating over how much of a gift you're willing to give them. Even when you do get something, they break it—Reagan's amnesty and gun control deals, while they shouldn't have happened under any circumstance, are at least more understandable when you remember that it was supposed to be a final thing—"you get this, then the issue is settled. You fix the border/you leave guns alone, it never happens again." Well, look how that worked out. They broke their word pretty much instantly.
