You don't need an encrypted email provider. More secure if you encrypt the messages yourself or use steganography.

PGP and GPG are good tools. Make sure your provider supports StartTLS for added security.

For example, Hushmail (Canadian firm) was ordered to decrypt and hand over encrypted emails on behalf of the US. (They had the technical ability to do so since that is how their service is set up).

Several I know of: Countermail Runbox Darkmail (run by Ladar Levison the guy who ran Lavabit and refused to assist NSA criminals) Kolab

A few considerations: The security of such a service really depends on how the data is encrypted. Are the private keys or passwords to decrypt some or all messages and attachments at all accessible to the operator? Are attachments encrypted? Are messages only encrypted when they arrive or also while in transit? What level of encryption is used? Should be at least 256 bit for the contents of communications. IIRC, GPG supports 4096 bit encryption. What algorithm do they use for encryption? Is the software that powers the service open source and do they contribute to its development? How good are they about patching bugs in security? Where is the business and the servers located? Is it in a country with an extradition treaty or a mutual legal assistance treaty? Is it an "Eyes" country (NSA collaborators). Is the encryption interoperable, and can encrypted messages be sent and received from users of other services? Several components of emails cannot be encrypted, and are found in the header of the message (which cannot be disabled): Sending IP address, sender email address, domain, subject. AFAIK, these can be obfuscated or spoofed but not "encrypted".
