I am a big advocate of the constitution, freedom of speech, and ideas, but I wonder with something so threatening to that very same constitution that protects us; should it be legal to spread communism in a free society? (Apologies if this is a stupid question. No such thing as a stupid question. 👍🏻)

No, only because once you outlaw that one wicked ideology, it empowers the state to outlaw any ideology.
