No need for them to. They've taken the US national government and the State Dept under Obama gave them the apparatus to take over US state governments.
The big if for the PLA is whether the Party will be satisfied with subverting and similarly gaining control of the Taiwanese government, or if they will make the big play by going to war with Taiwan, knowing that the US will do nothing. US inaction, betrayal of Taiwan, and likely tacit or even open approval of this act would mean the final, undeniable final nail in the US' coffin on the world stage.
China is determined to create a global empire. They need land and resources. While I tend to agree with you I wouldn’t be surprised if their top brass have been strategizing something along those lines.
Oh I'm sure they have and that it's probably on the table. I'd hate to be in Guam or Hawaii right now. China's Africa work is just training for expeditionary forces, but they currently lack a real expeditionary capability that would let them cross the Pacific and sustain operations. I really don't think they need to - with a successful Taiwan gambit and maybe bloodying the US near the Spratleys, they can effectively lord over all of southeast Asia and IMO official allies like the Philippines and Japan would quickly submit after seeing the US sell out Taiwan. Australia, who knows.
Given what's happened in the US, I think the world's only chance of escaping Chinese dominance is based on the fact that China really is asshoe, and their arrogance and hubris will eventually cause them to do overextend themselves and do something really stupid and fuck up bigly.
