You have to look at historical context to understand the meaning of words, in the same way that well "regulated" means well "trained" in modern vernacular.
They were socialists that started with Socialism and then mixed in some free markets, just like China did.
It only worked well economically because it was extremely oppressive to its people and because they had an infinite amount of war-effort work for the people to do.

I'm also referring to dumb metrics we use here like BMI. I'm 6'3" and have been in great shape at 205 and great shape at 240. The doctors would say I'm obese bases on their BMI charts and my body fat is pretty close to 10%.
I have no idea how the Chinese measure it, but I'm guessing there's very little consistency.
