As we become more affluent and less reliant on each other have you seen us become more unified? Or have you seen the fabrics of society start to fissure? We have a resilient society because our infrastructure is maintained by many individuals who by and large have purpose and ethic. The further you get from the farmlands, the more you engorge on luxury, the more disconnected your world view gets, the more you worry about carbon footprints, the more you develop sub cultures and divides.
An opulent ruling class has NEVER in history, cared for the underclasses beyond how they can exploit them.
