Likely he was ignorant or delusional to what's been going on in this country in terms of idealogical subversion and the institutional takeover from the left. Should have been his top priority instead it seems it was an afterthought, but that was always my fear about Trump. Great peacetime president, unfortunately we are at war and as far as I can tell he had no clue, at least until it was too late if he finally understood. That said I don't blame him. We are all subjected to the same delusion and brainwashing. He was really good at exposing that, just not great at doing anything about it. I hope it changes.
