I once worked for a company that did that type of polling among other things. The customer sets percentages for different groups they want and after a group met their quota, the computerized script would direct you to a thank you for your time and hang up. If a group is hard to get to do the survey, the customer is contacted to see if they will change their percentages a bit. The job was kind of interesting.
I've never heard of anyone actually being polled, aside from a few dimwits on Frank Luntz's television focus groups.
