I would argue that their border is harder to control because there is a lot more vegetation that they can use to hide themselves through. If I were President, I would just shut down western union and seize all remittances. The problem would be solved in seconds if not hours.
Sure, they'd need to clear a section for visibility. But ultimately it boils down to no one is willing to open fire, even rubber bullets, and the caravan knows it.
I don't think they can just cut stuff down, I think there are "protected" areas so it would be a real challenge to cut through the jungle. They need to start cracking down and preventing at all costs, but we all know that the US and the UN would do, if they shot a single rubber bullet.
Well... To be fair, most of this isn't coming from Mexico but through Mexico. And their southern border is a hell of a lot smaller than ours.
Make Mexico a deal. They secure their border and we'll MOAB some Cartels. Everyone wins.
