That is the look of "respect". That was one of Trump's most redeeming qualities where his foreign policy was concerned - he'd rather be respected than feared. When foreign leaders fear you, they're liable to saber-rattle and lash out. When they respect you, they'll sit down and listen to what you have to say.

"Politicians" will never understand this.

Putin easily recognized a fellow master 4d chess player.

Kim Jong Un is young enough to still be impressionable. If he'd spend more time Trump, he may come to see the errors of his ways.

Xi was probably more leaning to the "I fear Trump" side of things, but not because he thought Trump would nuke his ass. He feared what Trump stood for, and the influence he wielded and the respect he commanded.
