[Rod] Serling began his military career in 1943 at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, under General Joseph May "Joe" Swing and Col. Orin D. "Hard Rock" Haugen[2]:36–37 and served in the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division.[4] He eventually reached the rank of Technician Fourth Grade (T/4).[7]
