At the time we didn’t really appreciate how much Tom left us alone. That was just kind of assumed as the default stance of all websites and instead everyone complained about the MySpace pages with shitty code and ugly design. People liked Facebook in contrast because it allowed for some controlled customization - enough for people to express themselves - but nothing that would make a person’s page non-functional or overly difficult to navigate.
Customization was the best part though. MySpace allowed individuality, Facebook forces conformity.

The entire internet was wild West back then, unless you were on a very niche internet forum you were pretty much left alone.
